‘16 DAYS OF ACTIVISM AGAINST GENDER VIOLENCE’ LAUNCHED
State Resource Centre for Women (SRCW) observed the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women (IDEVW) and launched 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence on November 26.
A press release from 181-Women Helpline, Nagaland stated that SRCW under the aegis of Nagaland State Social Welfare Board (NSSWB) organized the program on the theme, “Orange the World: #HearMeToo.”
Daisy Mezhur, secretary of NSSWB and mission director of SRCW encouraged the girls to be confident and remember that “together we are power”. She also highlighted that now women have moved on from “welfare” to “development” to “empowerment”. She pointed out that 16 days of activism was observed to create awareness and to encourage young minds to come together to eliminate violence. She also spoke on how to change the traditional mindset and to take a progressive stand, be champions to eliminate violence in society. Lastly, she sensitized the institution on the 181-Women Helpline and Sakhi-One Stop Centre which helps women affected by violence in both public and private spaces.
Bano Vinito, chairperson of NSSWB, in her keynote address elaborated that the day was designated by the United Nations to be observed annually by likeminded organizations. Bano encouraged the girls to not remain silent but to report all cases of violence. She also pointed out how the #MeToo movement on social media was a symbol of resistance against sexual harassment.
Earlier, a welcome address was given by Dr. Fr. P. Suresh, principal of Don Bosco College and Anoka Chophi, presented a special number. On the occasion, the winner for the state theme song for Women was officially declared and launched. The song “Rise, Naga Women”, composed by Theyiesinuo Keditsu, music by Khyochano TCK, and Topeni as soloist, was chosen as the theme song for women. Thereafter, the winner for the #HearMeToo mobile photography competition was declared. Huntuntadbo bagged the first position followed by Wangpo and Saronthung Kikon in second and third places respectively. Dr. Imtinaro Longkumer, coordinator of Women Cell, DBS College gave the closing remarks and Meneno V, research officer of SRWC, chaired the program.
SJC Dimapur: Meanwhile, St John College (SJC) Dimapur commemorated “International Day to Eliminate Violence Against Women” at the college auditorium.
A press release from SJC Dimapur stated that, Dr Janetius, principal in his address highlighted the significance and importance of the day. Jube, member of Anti-ragging and Sexual Harassment Committee, raised awareness in the campus. Gaurav, assistant professor of English, emphasized on all forms of violence — physical, mental, emotional, psychological, domestic — and their manifestations.
Yepuli, 6th semester student, identified various reasons behind crimes against women which create gender inequality.
A pledge was taken by all male staff and students committing to speak out, act and prevent gender based violence and to create a violence free society.
Earlier in the program chaired by Lhushelu 6th semester student, a special song was presented by Rongsenyangla, 6th semester student, and a vote of thanks was offered by N. Esther Ezung HoD English.
