The Nagaland State Commission for Women (NSCW) in association with the National Commission for Women, New Delhi organised a one day seminar on the topic “Know your Rights” at Red Cross Building conference hall on June 15. The legal awareness seminar was organised in association with Kohima Lotha Eloe Ekhung (KLEE) with advocate, Ncumbemo Mozhui as the resource person.
Deliberating on the topic, Mozhui said that women’s rights and issues can be broadly classified under the Domestic Violence Act, 2005, the Sexual Harassment of women at workplace (Prevention, Prohibition and Redressal) Act, 2013 and the code of Criminal Procedure, 1908-Rape. He elaborated each of the Acts with specific Articles of the Constitution.
It is important that women should be aware of their legal rights, not to empower them to do as they pleased, but because through awareness they could approach the right forum for help and guidance, Mozhui said. He further explained that women may become victims of any crime such as murder, robbery, etc, but the crime directed specifically against women, are characterized as “Crime against Women.”
Mozhui laid emphasis on marriage, divorce & inheritance, Domestic Violence Act, Crime Against Women (POSCO) Act, Beti Bachao Beti padhao, Women & Child helpline, human trafficking and Nagaland Legal Service Authority. He later interacted with the participants.
Earlier, an introductory speech was delivered by Jakhalu, chairperson, NSCW while Renbeni Kikon, women leader, Ao Church, pronounced the invocation. Mhabeni Lotha, Jt. Secy, KLEE moderated the day long seminar which was attended by hundreds of women belonging to the Lotha Community.
