A two-day national webinar on “intellectual property rights for academic and research visibility” was organised by department of Sociology, St. Joseph’s College (SJC) (Autonomous) Jakhama on October 22-23.
A press release by the college stated that the webinar was collaborated with Cell for IPR Promotion and Management (CIPAM), department of Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade, Ministry of Commerce and Industry, Government of India.
In his opening remarks at the inaugural session, SJC principal Dr. Fr. George Keduolhou Angami highlighted the importance and potential of the webinar and acknowledged the appropriateness and relevance of the theme. He also exhorted all the young intellectuals to better grasp the opportunity.
Keynote speaker, assistant vice-president, CIPAM, Pearl Sobti introduced her theme and elucidated the importance to know IP and the rights attached to IP. She explicated the concept of IP as a tool and the importance to institution that oozes from proper management of IP.
Sobti briefly introduced the development and main tenets of CIPAM, mentioning the National IPR Policy 2016.
She then emphasised the importance and benefits of copyright and patent in the realm of intellectuals, researchers, students and institutions.
During the technical sessions, assistant manager, CIPAM Deeksha Arora spoke on the topic, “Introduction to Intellectual Property Rights”; University Librarian, Assam University, Dr. Vikram Kumar Sharma spoke on the topic, “Intellectual Property Rights and Research Ethics”; Head of department, Library and Information Science, Mizoram University, Professor Pravakar Rath spoke on the topic, “Academic Integrity and Prevention of Plagiarism for Academic and Research Development” and University Librarian, Manipur University Imphal, Dr.Nihar K. Patra spoke on the topic, “The Big 3 in IPR: Copyrights, Patents and Trademarks.”
At the valedictory session, assistant manager CIPAM, N. Subramanian enlightened the participants on the awareness and benefits of IP and the importance of commercialisation of opportunities within and outside the institution.
The two days national webinar was attended by around 490 participants consisting of students, staff, researchers, and academicians from the college and across the country.
