Central Youth Organisation (CYO) of Nationalist Democratic Progressive Party (NDPP) organised a cleanliness drive on the theme, “Go zero waste for healthy lifestyle,” across Kohima town, on Saturday.
Advisor for Transport & Technical Education, Temjenmenba was the special guest. In his address, Temjenmenba said the present government had all the essential qualities for youths who were innovative, progressive and productive.
He said the government had created an ecosystem which encourages youths to conceptualise their ideas and promote developmental policies.
On the environment sector, he said there was a dire need to come up with alternatives and solutions to mitigate pollution in the form of burning fossil fuels.
He pointed out that only through innovation of new energy sources, the present form of various pollution could be tackled.
In a short speech MLA, Kohima town, Dr Tseilhoutuo Ato Rhütso, thanked the party for taking the step to clean the state capital. He said the time was right even as the Hornbill Festival and Christmas was soon approaching.
He stated that the cleanliness was everyone’s responsibility and therefore no one should expect anything in return.
He pointed out that Kohima has a population of around 2 lakh people and the city produces around 90 tonnes of wastes daily out of which only half goes to recycle while the rest goes to landfills.
He urged shop keepers to make it their responsibility to keep their surroundings clean on a regular basis.
Former MLA, Dr Neikiesalie Nicky Kire, said there was a need to practically insist business establishments to keep their respective spaces clean in order to keep the city clean.
He suggested that colony wards and panchayats should compete with KMC to keep the city clean so that the latter would also be encouraged to work harder.
Earlier, president, NDPP CYO, Imchatoba Imchen informed that youths in all the six Assembly constituencies under Kohima were pressed into action as part of the drive.
