Ao Senden has served an ultimatum on the PWD (national highways) to urgently initiate repairs along NH-61 (VK Town-Doyang stretch) and make the road passable within 30 days as a contingency measure.

In the ultimatum addressed to the deputy chief minister and minister in-charge national highway, the Ao Senden president Marsanen Imsong and general secretary Imtipokyim pointed out that VK Town-Doyang stretch of NH-61 was the only direct link between Mokokchung district and the state capital Kohima.

Ao Senden stated that people of Mokokchung were the worst affected due to the “pathetic condition” of the national highway. With Mokokchung-Mariani (NH-702D) and Mokokchung-Amguri (NH-61) roads not pliable for light vehicles, Ao Senden said this road remains the only alternative for both the people of Mokokchung and a number of eastern districts.

However, it stated that this national highway was becoming unfit for travel, causing immense hardship to the people. Ao Senden said it had been a long-standing need of the affected citizens to have a reliable and unhindered road—an aspiration that has persisted for more than a decade.

It lamented that the responsible officials, who were expected to exemplify good governance and oversee timely project implementation for public welfare, have failed to administer and execute the development due to lackadaisical attitude and self-interest.

“This neglect has led to the current predicament,” Ao Senden said and urged the state government to identify and hold accountable those responsible for the lapses.

Therefore, as resolved at its meeting on October 24, 2024, Senden has requested the minister in-charge to urgently initiate repairs to make the road passable within 30 days as a contingency measure. Ao Senden also urged the department to expedite the two-lane project without further delay.

In the event of failure to address the issues within the stipulated time, Ao Senden said “we reserve the right to take our own course of action as deemed befitting by us.”
