NU impasse resolved

After a marathon meeting involving State government officials, Nagaland University authority, teachers and students and mass-based civil organizations, the month-long impasse between the Nagaland University authority and Nagaland University Teachers’ Association (NUTA) was finally resolved here Friday evening.
A joint press statement signed by chief secretary Lalhuma, vice chancellor Prof. K Kannan, Naga Hoho president Keviletuo Kiewhuo, NUTA president Rosemary Dzuvichü, PGSU presidents of three campuses of NU, and presidents of NMA, NSF, NSCF, ENPO, ENSF, AWO and ANCSU, informed that the vice chancellor agreed to revoke the suspension of eight members of NUTA and also drop charges framed against the teachers in the departmental enquiry, with immediate effect.
In reciprocation, all members of NUTA agreed to resume their duties and, simultaneously, withdraw their resignations from various University councils, committees and HoDs, and also to withdraw their demand for removal of the vice chancellor, registrar and controller of examinations of Nagaland University.
The joint meeting held in the conference hall of State chief secretary that lasted for four hours, also resolved that henceforth, NUTA and PGSU and non-teaching staff should refrain from any form of agitation that would result in disruption of normal functioning of the University or conduct of classes in the campus.
Further, all grievances of the teachers, non-teaching staff and students should be addressed to Nagaland University through the grievances cell, to be constituted by the University within one week.
Meanwhile, following the meeting, the PGSU also called off their picketing of NU office Friday evening.
As news came in about the successful outcome of the meeting, the charged atmosphere of the picketing was replaced by scenes of euphoria among students. The students sang “We shall over come …and we have over come” and shook hands with police personnel deputed during the picketing.
