Police and security forces in Senapati district headquarters are on high alert as tension is running high with the news of state cabinet discussing the burning issue of creation of Sadar Hills district demand on Wednesday.
The agitation was said to have extended to the Imphal-Ukhrul section of the NH-150 Wednesday.
Reports received here said that tension was running high in Senapati district as people are apprehensive that the state cabinet would take a decision regarding the creation of Sadar Hills district by bifurcating Senapati district.
The cabinet under the chair of the chief minister met this evening. An official source said that the agenda of the meeting was to discuss issue of Sadar Hills district demand with reference to law and order problems of the state.
Many civil and students organisations based in Senapati district, Senapati District Students’ Association (SDSA), Naga Youth Front (NYF) and others like the All Naga Students’ Union Mainpur (ANSUM) and United Naga Council (UNC) are opposing the bifurcation of Senapati district. With the tension running high, police conducted a publicity using loud-speaker asking if any Imphal bound vehicles stranded in Senapati area report immediately to the police so as to prevent any untoward incident.
Meanwhile, hundreds of people at Gwaltabi along the NH-150 took to the streets and disturbed the traffic.
After burning down a truck Tuesday, people took to the street and blocked the traffic. They attacked vehicles moving on the highway with stones and sling-shots. In the attack windshields of many vehicles were shattered.
Police, in an effort to allow normal traffic flow, fired several rounds of tear gas, rubber bullets, inflicting injuries to several protestors, mostly women. On the other hand, representatives of the SHDDC convened a meeting at Hotel Imphal, Imphal Wednesday at 11 am with the members of the Sadar Hills Autonomous District Council (ADC) and three MLAs of Sadar Hills area.
The meeting reaffirmed the decision of SHDDC to go ahead with the agitation until the demand was fulfilled and later on submitted a memorandum to the chief minister O Ibobi Singh reiterating their demand for creation of Sadar Hills district.
While submitting SHDDC representatives called on chief minister, who insisted to withdraw their agitations informing that a cabinet meeting scheduled later this evening will discuss the matter. However, they (SHDDC members) walked out sticking to their decision not to withdraw until government fixed a date for inauguration of the district.
Manipur People Party (MPP), in the meantime, lambasted the SPF government alleging that it has mishandled the Sadar Hills district demand issue and warns the government to solve the issue before thing goes out of hand.
Addressing a press conference at its office, MPP president Dr Nimaichand Luwang alleged that before the Sadar Hills district demand issue was yet to settle, chief minister O Ibobi Singh brought out the issue of demands for creation of Jiribam, Phunyar and bifurcation of Churachandpur district.
Recently, Chief Minister had, in a press conference, said that government was considering the creation of districts like Jiribam, Sadar Hills, Phungyar (of Ukhrul) and division of Churachandpur district into two. MPP termed this as mishandling of issue stating that Chief Minister had said it without any ground preparations.
Without clearly mentioning of supporting the creation of Sadar Hills district, the MPP president insisted that government should end the deadlock with SHDDC at the earliest. He also demanded government ensure availability of essential commodities to the people.
