NUTA seeks President’s intervention

Nagaland University Teachers’ Association (NUTA) has demanded immediate intervention of the President of India, who is also the visitor of NU, into the suspension of ten NUTA central executive council members by vice chancellor, Nagaland University, Prof. K Kannan on August 25 and 29.
NUTA in a memorandum to President of India, submitted through the State governor, said it was shocking that in the midst of a visitorial inquiry and smooth academic activities, the vice chancellor had issued the first “illegal” suspension orders against NUTA president and secretary general on August 25.
Kannan’s reported refusal to allow the delegation of teachers from all three campuses to meet him for revocation of the orders on August 26, led to total academic cease-work by NUTA since August 27, prompting the vice chancellor to further suspend eight more executive members of NUTA on August 29.
NUTA officials said the Governor had assured the 10-member delegation that he would immediately faxed the memorandum to the President’s office.
The memorandum stated that in the light of illegal developments of harassment, victimization and personal vendetta against teachers, and earlier allegations against him, based on prima facie evidence, the Association reiterated its demand for Kannan’s immediate removal from the post of vice chancellor.
NUTA also demanded for immediate removal of the registrar, NU, Thejao Vihienuo and controller of examination, Tongpang Ao, on charges of ineligibility for their respective posts post and corruption.
“All necessary documentary evidences have been submitted to Your Excellency’s esteemed office, the Ministry of Human Resource Development, as well as to the Fact Finding Committee, during their visit to Nagaland University,” the memorandum stated.
Earlier, NUTA members gathered at NU office and proceeded to Raj Bhavan to submit the memorandum.
The members held banners and placards, some of which read “We demand resignation of VC. We demand the resignation of registrar,” “We demand revocation of suspension orders,” “We want justice, Kannan don’t undermine Nagas,” “Actions, no lies”, “We want a corruption free- university” and “No more dirty politics.”
