Police overseeing puja celebration

In the wake of bomb blasts and communal violence rocking different parts of the country including the Northeastern states, Dimapur police have stepped up vigil to ensure peaceful celebration of Durga Puja festival in the State’s commercial hub.
Amid apprehension and reports of some elements trying to disturb the ongoing puja celebration, Dimapur police led by SP Liremo Lotha and additional SP Dimapur VZ Angami Monday evening visited a number of puja pandals in various colonies to take stock of the situation and ensure peaceful celebration of the festival.
Earlier, in the afternoon, Dimapur police held a joint meeting with various puja committees and organizers and discussed ways and means to ensure peaceful and smooth celebration of the festival.
When contacted, additional SP VZ Angami told Nagaland Post that police were taking all precautionary measures to thwart any attempt at disturbing the puja celebration.
It may be mentioned around forty puja pandals have been set up in various pockets and colonies of Dimapur with puja revelers and visitors alike thronging the pandals till late night. The five-day festival will conclude with the immersion of the goddess Durga on October 10.
Meanwhile, two Congress legislators from Dimapur have extended their greetings on the occasion of Durga Puja.
“Through this occasion, let us bring brotherhood and oneness among different community and together strive to overcome the evils so that peace prevails among us,” Congress MLA representing Dimapur-I Assembly seat KL Chishi said in his message.
In a separate message, Congress MLA from Dimapur-III A/C Azheto Zhimomi said it was disconcerting that some miscreants were trying to disturb the puja celebrations in some pockets. Appealing to right thinking citizens and police to rein in any “subversive elements,” he said “religious tolerance and social harmony is infact the beauty of Dimapur. And this beautiful image should be perpetually preserved.”
However, police said they have not received any complaint so far from the organizers and puja committees.
