Joining the rest of the country, Nagaland Police observed Police Commemoration Day Tuesday here at Tennis Court, Police New Reserve, Phesama.
Addressing the solemn function, Director General of Police (DGP) Nagaland J. Chankija, appealed to all the police officers and personnel of Nagaland Police to draw inspiration from all those personnel who had sacrificed their lives for a noble cause and made the police force proud of their sacrifices.
The DGP called upon the police personnel to rededicate themselves to their profession to serve the people of Nagaland in particular.
Informing that during the last twelve months, as many as 685 policemen sacrificed their lives in the service of the nation, Chankija said death of any citizen due to violence was a loss to society, more so in the case of a policeman, because the society loses not only a trained person but also a protector of the law.
He also reminded the general public that it was their bounden duty to remember the family and children of those police personnel who sacrificed their lives and called upon the people to extend all possible help so that circumstances and their struggle for existence did not break their confidence.
SP (Crime) Sonia Singh read out the ‘Roll of Honour’ containing 685 names of gallant policemen, which included E. Honji Konyak from Nagaland (10th IRB), who sacrificed their precious lives during the period from September 1, 2007 to August 31, 2008.
Senior police officials and various state police units also laid wreaths marking the Police commemoration day.
It may be mentioned Police Commemoration Day is observed every year to commemorate the sacrifice made by ten CRPF personnel who laid down their lives defending the Chinese aggressors at Hot Spring of Ladakh region on October 21, 1959.
