Few years back there was only one fashion week held in the capital i.e. the “Lakme Fashion Week” and today we have “Wills Lifestyle Fashion Week”, “Lakme Fashion Week”, “Delhi Fashion Week”, “Haute Couture Week”, our very own “ NEIFT North East Fashion Week” and the recently started “Kolkata Fashion Week.”

In the world of fashion academic of our region North East Institute of Fashion (NEIFT) of Guwahati is playing an unparalleled role creating a breed of new fashion designers from different socio-economic backgrounds and bringing with them a strong forte of their traditional handlooms and weaves.
NEIFT provides a 2 year diploma in fashion design of four (4) semesters. Students are exposed to the humdrum activities of the industry through big-time fashion events in their two (2) year tenure as students.
C.E.O, NEIFT Vikram Rai Medhi said “Our students understand fashion terms on a ground level through these fashion events which we call NEIFT design ceremony. I am very privileged to say that each of our design ceremonies are supported and sponsored by the ministry of textiles, government of India and its various departments which is indeed a unique record for a fashion institute of the North East.”
He also informed that the minister of state for textiles, government of India himself personally came down to Guwahati in one of the ceremony to be present with the students and the faculty of NEIFT.
Recently, joint secretary of ministry of textiles, government of India, Bhupendra Singh IAS who is in charge of silk, jute, wool and NIFT came to officially visit the campus of NEIFT and had an interactive session with the students and management of NEIFT. He was highly satisfied with the students and promised more support from ministry of textiles in the future.
In continuation in their strive to provide top of the line courses having tremendous job opportunities, NEIFT is introducing for the first time fashion merchandising from the current session, starting from June 2009. It can be mentioned that NEIFT is providing this course exclusively in the entire North East.
Fashion merchandising at NEIFT is professional courses designed in a manner to aid students secure a career in the fashion industry both nationally as well as internationally.
Fashion merchandising is an integral part of the fashion industry. From the early stages of fashion forecasting to the final stages of retail displacement, merchandising dictates the structure of the process as well as the finished product.
Merchandising is a process that involves co-ordination and execution of a purchase order in the garment/retail industry. It involves understanding the dynamics at work right from the purchase of the raw materials to production to the delivery of the consignment.
Fashion merchandising offers a solid platform for those wishing to pursue fashion careers and offers a scope of white collar jobs in international marketing, fashion merchandiser, brand manager, retail buyer, global sourcing manager, product developer, visual merchandiser, export merchandiser, production managers, production coordinators and vendor manager.
The current session at NEIFT will also start a new batch of Interior Designing. Both fashion merchandising and interior designing will be one year diploma courses of two semesters while fashion designing will be of 2 years with four semesters. Counseling and Spot admissions to these coveted courses will take place on April 25 at Hotel Japfü, Kohima and on April 26 at Hotel Saramati, Dimapur from 11am to 3 pm for students of Nagaland. We feel that the fashion revolution of north east is moving in the right direction.
