It must have been like Groundhog Day for Sarah Brown as yet another glossy-haired, willowy, world leader’s wife waltzed through the hallowed door of No.10. As Queen Rania of Jordan looked and much more youthful than her 38 years as she arrived with husband King Abdullah II.
Sarah Brown, for all her bright beads and blow-dries, would have had to have been a saint not to have been taken aback by her impossible beauty.
In recent months 45-year-old Sarah has had to face endless comparisons with the WAGs of her husband’s contemporaries. First there was the French Premier’s wife – ex-supermodel and singer Carla Bruni-Sarkozy – who brought to Downing Street raven locks, a wardobe full of Dior gowns and a self-satisfied smile.
Then, more benevolent but no less glamorous, came the statuesque Michelle Obama, full of contrasts in her floral power-tea dresses and flawless skin; a woman to whom choosing cool clothes that make an impact comes as naturally as public speaking comes to husband Barack.
On Monday, 5ft 9in brunette Queen Rania, with her glossy brown hair and model figure, looking more like a film star than royalty, poured herself into a liquid dove-grey dress for the Downing Street meeting, cinched at her enviable hand-span waist with a funky snakeskin belt, and accessorised with snake clutch and peep-toe stiletto shoes. Sarah, while dressed in one of the finest outfits she has worn during Gordon’s premiership, could only have looked like the kindly aunt in comparison to the stunning royal.
