Following the inaction of the authorities despite repeated request, New market Panchayat and the youth took initiative in conducting social work on Saturday to clean the drainage on the roadside of NH-39 to prevent excess flow of sewage water into the locality.
Several youths led by the New Market Panchayat also cleaned up water diversion culverts at the entrance of WW-II cemetery and SKV Petrol pump.
All drainage water coming from BOC area flows on the roadside drain and is diverted through two culverts located near SKV Petrol Pump and at the entrance of War Cemetery down towards Midland. Once the culvert is blocked, all the drainage water flows to New Market colony causing frequent landslides during rainy season. The blockage of the drain and culvert are mainly caused by haphazard water pipelines laid along the drainage and also inside the culverts.
“We wrote to the BRTF on the blockage of the drain last year following which the BRTF sent their workers and clean up the blocked culvert along with the New Market youth”, said a colony Panchayat member working at the site. Since then, there has been no maintenance by the BRTF and the culvert has been blocked again.
“This year with the onset of rainy season, we’ve written to the BRTF and also the district administration, but there has been no response till date and so the colony has decided to take up the work so as to save the locality from landslide. If there is landslide in our locality, not only the locality will suffers but both the two National Highway (NH-39 and NH-61) will be affected and the whole of Kohima will be cut off from the rest of the state”, he added.
On the other hand, pointing out to a big hole left on the roadside near the entrance of War Cemetery where the culvert is located, he said that both the BRTF and administration failed to provide any road safety measures posing great danger to both pedestrian and vehicles.
“There is scarcity of water for the PHE to supply, but we have in excess sewage water in our colony”, remarked a youth while taking part in the social work. He also pointed to the haphazardly laid pipelines lying in the drain and said “these PHE water supply pipelines are the main cause of the blockage of drain and culverts.
