Mon district literacy rate at 56.47%

DIMAPUR:  Deputy commissioner, Mon Dinesh Kumar, IAS challenged the new office bearers of Konyak Students Union (KSU) to improve the literacy rate of the district.
Highlighting the latest literacy rate of the state, he said Mon district was far behind with a mere 56.47% literacy rate and that it was a matter of concern since Mon was 14% below the average rate while other districts were thriving above 71%.
He said this while addressing the 2nd day of the 64th general conference of KSU on April 20 at Council hall, Mon.
Stressing on RTE and free elementary education, he appealed the village councils and students community to adopt a resolution to send all children to schools and ensure that no single children are left out. Asserting that students have a vital role to play in the changing era of globalization and technologies, he enlightened students about the changing dynamics and responsibility of students in this fast developing world, and to update and equip themselves with the change of time.
Referring to unemployment problem among educated youth, he said due to various factors in the society, students get into the wrong path and thus ruin their future career.
Citing that one cannot fully depend on government jobs, he underscored there were ample avenues available in the private sectors and urged students to grab the opportunities available in the private sectors.
While emphasizing on the need of conducting career counselling for students, he informed that one day career counselling would be conducted for the students on April 27, with resource persons from various departments.
He further elucidated that student’s body can protest and demand but should be in tune with the democratic system without hampering the normal activities of government, and at the same time, appreciated NGOs of the district for their assistance in maintaining law and order in the district.
Manlang Phom, president Phom Students’ Conference (PSC) stressed on close relationship shared among the Phoms and Konyaks.
He hoped that the goodwill, peace and tranquility of the two communities would continue to grow in the days to come. Asserting KSU was one of the strongest and the ever-standing, steadfast federating units of ENSF, he also acknowledged the enormous task undertaken by the KSU for the uplift of society, and urged the gathering to retrospect the achievements and failures of the union, and play a crucial role for which the KSU stands for.
He further urged the students to be the vanguard of society, free from exploitation.
Tingyeih Konyak, advisory board member, KSU, also exhorted the students.
Voluntary blood donation
Coinciding with the 64th general conference of KSU, two days voluntary blood donation and testing for HIV and AIDS was launched by the Nagaland State AIDS control Society on April 20 and 21 in the premises of the Council hall, Mon. Besides voluntary blood donation and blood testing for HIV and AIDS, the camp also distributed magazines and booklets to the youth, as part of awareness about HIV and AIDS.
A good number of youth especially students turned out for the voluntary blood donation and blood testing for HIV and AIDS. Altogether, 41 persons turned up for blood testing of HIV and AIDS. 15 persons voluntarily donated blood.
The team was headed by Dr. Chenjei Konyak, medical officer in charge of Link Art Centre, District Hospital, Mon. ICTC counselor district hospital, Mon; ICTC counselors, Aboi; mobile ICTC counselor; mobile ICTC laboratory technician; link workers scheme resource persons; outreach workers, Mon and mobile ICTC staff were involved as campaign workforce in the awareness campaign.
