In an attempted robbery of an Automated Teller Machine (ATM) in Kohima, miscreants on Sunday damaged the ATM of the State Bank of India (SBI) Lerie branch located below Hotel Grandeur, while trying to loot cash in broad daylight. SBI branch manager N.C Borah, revealed that the miscreants broke the ATM and damaged the entire wiring system. The miscreants were however, unable to get their hands on the cash, it was stated. Ordinarily, ATMs stored cash depending on the expected transactions in the particular area. The incident came to light hours after wards when the staff in-charge of the ATM went to close the shutter at around 6 p.m. on Sunday. Borah appealed to customers and the general public to extend cooperation with the bank as ATMs were installed for providing better services to people. He also said that the branch wanted to open more ATMs at AG Colony and other places in Kohima under its jurisdiction as demanded by the customers but such incidents could prove a stumbling block. A bank officer said the incident was the first ever that had taken place in SBI Lerie branch. Earlier, the same ATM was damaged due to short circuit. The ATM of the SBI Lerie branch is all days of the week from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. as there are only few customers who avail the services at night. A case was registered and investigation on, bank sources said.
