Regional consultative meeting and orientation workshop on implementation of Saakshar Bharat programme organised by ministry of human resource development, department of school education and literacy got underway at Japfu Hotel on July 22. Minister for school education & SCERT, Nyeiwang Konyak was the chief guest.
Joint secretary to MHRD & director general national literacy mission authority Jagmohan Singh, while addressing the inaugural session of the two-day programme assured that NLMA officials will visit the state every three months or visit every month if required.
He however told the gathering not to consider adult education as a central government sponsored programme but take it as a mass movement. He also lauded the state for achieving 80.11% literacy rate with gender literacy gap of 7% which was much below the national rate of 16%.
Enlightening the role of adult literacy campaign, he said the basic aim was to make the illiterate, literate. He said organic farming, preservation and conservation was very much part of adult literacy.
School Education Minister Neiwang Konyak who graced the occasion as the chief guest said literacy starts from home and to educate the whole family members, women folk play a vital role.
While lauding the government of India for taking the right decision in implementing the Saakshar Bharat programme, focusing more on women literacy, he felt that orientation was more important than launching because the state, districts and village functionaries would be provided training on how to implement the programme.
Hailing from Mon district, the minister said he was also one of the proud beneficiaries of the programme and for effective implementation of the programme in Nagaland, the School Education department plans to involve Church organisation, student leaders and other NGO bodies to support the programme and to eradicate illiteracy in the four districts. However, Nyeiwang said that one should not forget the other seven districts as well if 100% literacy was to achieve in the state.
He also revealed that for effective implementation of the programme in the state, the state government have plans to involve the church organizations, students’ leaders and other NGO bodies. Their support to the programme would be crucial to eradicate the illiteracy in these four districts, he added.
He also reminded the gathering that while it has concern about the four districts, it should not forget the other seven districts if we are to achieve 100% literacy in the state. Since Nagaland State has a literacy percentage of 80.11%, there is no reason why the state should not be able to achieve 100% literacy in the next few years time.
Commissioner & Secretary School Education, T. Imkonglemba chaired the function and gave a brief overview of the status of education in the state. Reigning Miss Nagaland 2010, Hattinneng Hangsing representing the NLMA, local partner ‘Beauty and Aesthetic Society of Nagaland’ (BASN) and also the brand ambassador of Adult Literacy campaign in the state thanked the MHRD for launching the programme in the state, stating the campaign can be instrumental in transforming the society.
