Children as young as five are being hospitalised for anorexia, it was revealed Sunday.
Ninety-eight kids between five and seven have been treated for the eating disorder in the last three years. And 99 aged eight and nine were taken in over the same period.
There were another 1,900 sufferers between 10 and 15, according to NHS figures revealed under the Freedom of Information Act. Experts fear the shocking revelation is just the tip of the iceberg.
They say the statistics show only those so ill they have to be admitted to hospital – meaning the problem could be far more widespread. The figures, released by NHS trusts around Britain, highlight the growing concern that young people, mainly girls, are obsessed with being thin.
Susan Ringwood, of eating disorder charity Beat, said many were trying to emulate superslim celebrities. She added: “Girls see pictures in magazines of extremely thin women and think that is how they should be.
That can leave them fearful of puberty, and almost trying to stave it off.”
