Ryan O’Neal’s promised to show his troubled son Redmond ‘tough love’ after he pled not guilty to gun and heroin possession today.
The 26-year-old denied the charges at LAX Airport Courthouse in Los Angeles Friday afternoon and was refused bail.
His Oscar-moninated father O’Neal said he agreed with comments made by judge Keith Schwartz, who said the 26-year-old needed to be treated more strictly.
However the Love Story star also blamed Redmond’s troubles on the fact he has never got over the death of his mother Farrah Fawcett, who died from cancer in 2009.
Speaking about the judge outside the courthouse alongside his daughter Tatum Ryan, 70, said: ‘I agree with that completely. He said all the right things’.
‘He never recovered from the loss of his mother. That’s the part that hurts the most’.
‘He doesn’t know how to resolve it for himself so he gets in trouble.’
The actor also said his family was ‘falling apart’ after Redmond was arrested and his son Griffin was in a head on car crash within hours of each other on Tuesday.
Luckily his 46-year-old older son was not seriously injured.
He said: ‘It’ll come back. Griffin is 45-years-old [sic], so he’s lasted this long, he’ll find a way to pick himself up’.
‘Redmond is more of a problem. He has a real illness and we are terribly worried for him’.
‘He hasn’t been in rehab in four or five months and look what happened.’
Redmond is going to be held at the Twin Towers Correctional Facility is the LA County Medical Center jail ward until his next hearing later this month.
Tatum said: ‘He’s going to Twin Towers. I don’t think there’s anything tougher than that right now’.
‘He’s an addict, addicts use unfortunately, and they just keep using until they want to stop. We’re praying for him every day’.
‘We want him to live a good life and not have drugs in his life.’
When asked whether Redmond should serve time in prison if he is found guilty, Tatum said: ‘No’, while her father uttered the words ‘oh god’.
As Redmond has previous convictions, he admitted to drug possession in 2009, it is illegal under California law for him to have a firearm.
RadarOnline reports the criminal complaint as saying: ‘A Felony, was committed by Redmond James O’Neal, who did unlawfully own, possess, purchase, receive, and have custody and control of a firearm, to wit, handgun, the said defendant having theretofore been duly and legally convicted of a felony or felonies.’
His attorney Richard Pintal was expected to ask Judge Keith Schwartz to release Redmond on bail to a residential rehab facility.
Police say 26-year-old Redmond, the son of the late Farrah Fawcett, was pulled over in Santa Monica on Tuesday morning after he ran a red light.
Officers are said to have found a quantity of heroin in his car when they inspected his vehicle.
A police spokesman told the website: ‘At approximately 8.45am a motor officer observed an argument at a store on Lincoln corner of Michigan.
