MLA and advisor sericulture and cooperation Azheto Zhimomi on Saturday told students of Eastern Nagaland not to take “backward quota” as an excuse and remain complacent but to compete with others. He reminded that people are now living in the 21st century and students of Eastern Nagaland should not stay at home by taking “backward quota” as an excuse but to exercise their wisdom and march forward.
He was speaking as a chief guest at the 21st general session of Eastern Nagaland Students’ Union Dimapur (ENSUD) held on the theme ‘self introspection’ at Town Hall.
Azheto said Eastern Nagas were going through rapid changes with series of events and plights as highlighted more than ever through the media.
He also asked if students were compromising their future due to “backward quota.”
“Eastern Nagas seem to be wrestling with socio- economic-politic issue. I wish only the best for Eastern Nagas,” Azheto said.
Stating that despite relatively lacking in infrastructure and other developmental activities in Eastern Nagaland as compared with other districts, Azheto said the character of “the people” cannot be discounted. He urged the students to set their goals and be responsible for their success and failure.
Guest of honour, (PHED) executive engineer L. Leyang Khiamniungan exhorted the students to be a man of integrity. Leyang asked the students to introspect how honest or truthful they were and whether they were heading for progress or disunity.
He also said while Eastern Nagas were complacent on having “quota” they should also try hard to achieve and progress as others are also progressing.
ENSUD office bearers were elected for the tenure of 2011-13 with Honko Konyak as the president and Seitsiba Sangtam as general secretary.
The union also felicitated students who excelled in academic field. Representative of Eastern Naga Women Organisation, former ENSUD president and its banker Shilu Sangtam also spoke at the session. The formal session was followed by cultural session. The programme was attended by student unions comprising of six tribes of Eastern Nagaland viz. Chang, Yimchunger, Khiamniungan, Konyak, Sangtam and Phom.
