Congress lawmaker K V Pusa said the future of Naga society would depend on how the society prepare the next generation who would be taking over as leaders.
Speaking at the 15th biennial general conference of All Nagaland College Students Union on Friday at St. Joseph’s College Jakhama, former president of Pradesh Congress Committee (PCC) and congress MLA, Pusa said Nagas have come to a critical juncture in which the upcoming phase of transition would plunge Nagas into their rightful destiny if they did well.
He said Nagas are equal and that it was not a positive approach to put themselves into different economic categories in terms of tribes. He was apparently referring to some section of Naga people currently trying to categorize themselves into different economic categories. “We are in the same boat, we have the same history, we face the same struggle and we also fight the same challenges”, he asserted.
The veteran Congress leader said the allegation of lopsided developmental activities and inequitable distribution of state resources which has given rise to resentments being interpreted to incite tribal animosity was not justifiable. He said it was a fact the development of areas and regions which were lagging behind should be brought at par with remedial programmes and schemes specifically designed for that purpose. However, he said the tragedy was that people have begun to see everything in the light of a tribal mindset. Every major institution whether it is governmental agency, students or Church or other socio-cultural groups have become tribe-based in their organization Pusa said. He said today there is no place for tribal identities.
He said “tribalism has become irrelevant as it can no longer fulfill their ultimate aspirations. Tribalism will work only in small arena where there is unscrupulous fight for parochial egotism and struggle for unscrupulous gain over available minimal resources. We should not be likes savages fighting for a meal over a game kill” the congress leader said.
On education, Pusa insisted that scope of education should not be limited to employment stating that it was the development of the whole person and not just an attribute that would land in job and social security. He said the problem with employment was that people seem to have a wrong perception that government should be the sole job creator and employer. He urged communities to generate opportunities for employment, and said if there was a way people could generate income, be it farming, business or small manufacturing, it would not only sustain the worker but also add to their gross economic output and income.
Pusa said Nagas have the resources to be develop butlamented lack of productivity. He said the energy that drives the impulse to succeed should be powered by a good education system which is one that meets the standards compatible with contemporary trends in technology and advancement in the rest of the world.
He said student community is the right group in society which could play a key role in devising principles which determine the collective will of the people.
“We have much confidence in our younger generation. Though you might not have seen with your eyes how our elders faced such hardship to bring us so far, when you finally take over the stage, you should be fully prepared to carry on the pursuit of the dreams of our people with the same will and determination”, Pusa exhorted the students.
