Nagaland police Friday joined the rest of the nation in paying rich tributes to 635 police personnel who laid down their lives while on duty during the past one year.
Saluting the valor and sacrifice of the departed police personnel, police commemoration day parade was held here at New Reserve, Phesama.
Paying homage to the 635 departed ‘comrades’ DGP Nagaland K. Kire speaking as chief guest asserted that the occasion called for all police personnel to rededicate themselves to the service of the country.
He reminded that police personnel that when they joined service they were made aware that they would even be required to lay down the lives in defence of the nation if needed.
Pointing out that the police not only maintained law and order but also served the country by sacrificing their lives, Kire called upon all police personnel of Nagaland to uphold the principles and to devote themselves to their service.
Besides the commemoration parade, names of all the 635 police personnel who laid down their lives in the line of duty were read out in a roll honour. Among them, three personnel were from the state police- ABSI Kwerieheung Dominique, havildar Lalen Doungel and constable Kuvechiyi Chakhesang.
Later, the DGP along with officers of Nagaland police, DG Prisons O. Alem and invitees placed wreaths at a martyrs’ cenotaph erected at the parade ground.
Police Commemoration began after ten CRPF jawans led by DSP Karam Singh died heroic deaths while being ambushed by Chinese forces on October 21, 1959. The jawans fought bravely at the altitude of 16,000 feet and against all odds.
Meanwhile in Phek District, the 5th NAP Battalion, Phek observed Police Commemoration Day on October 21 at 5th NAP Battalion Headquarter along with their counterparts.
In the solemn function, Phek Sr. SP Vika Sumi read out the name of the police personnel of the country who made their supreme sacrifice in the line of duty and said that were the heroes of the nation for which the day had been observed in remembrance to them, stated an official buleltin.
He also paid tribute to the departed comrades. All ranking officers, PTC chief advisor & members and uniformed personnel also paid a tribute to the departed souls.
