Mirroring the array of different communities that coexists in unity in the state capital, Lerie colony panchayat, Kohima which acts as an umbrella to a blend of people from different tribes, cultures and religion residing in the colony celebrated its 25 years anniversary Thursday at St. Mary’s Cathedral Higher Secondary School ground Kohima.
Parliamentary secretary for social welfare, child & women development Chotisuh Sazo who graced the occasion as chief guest exhorted the gathering that panchayats needed to be strengthened as they were a form of local self government tending to the welfare and checks unwanted activities in their respective localities.
While lauding the pioneers, senior citizens and residents of Lerie colony on completion of 25 years, Sazo pointed out the absence of women representatives in the panchayat and asserted that women also deserved a few posts in the local self government body. He opined that good things could be contributed to the growth of the society if women were included in decision making bodies.
Stating that “inactiveness” of good people in the society led to increase in activities of bad ones, Sazo called upon the residents of the colony to inculcate civic sense and respect one another’s culture and rights so as to bring positive change as well as set an example for the rest of the state.
Meanwhile, the parliamentary secretary also conveyed minister for urban development Dr. Shürhozelie Liezietsu’s message for the occasion, congratulating residents of the colony on completing 25 years since its panchayat’s inception.
Meanwhile, guest of honour of the programme, MLA & chairman NKVIB Dr. Nicky Kire delivered greetings to the colony residents on the occasion. He also enthralled the gathering by presenting a song.
The colony paid rich tributes to the panchayat’s former leaders and brought out a souvenir commemorating the Silver Jubilee celebration of Lerie panchayat, which was released by the chief guest during the programme.
