JACWR seeks Governor, CS, NPCC’s attention on women quota

March 22, 2012 | by admin

Joint Action Committee on Women reservation (JACWR) has sought “immediate” intervention of Governor Nikhil Kumar, state chief secretary and NPCC urging them to honour the High Court order on women’s quota in “toto” and in ensuring protection of women’s rights.

In separate memorandums submitted to the Governor, chief secretary and opposition leader Tokheho Yepthomi, JACWR said that Naga Hoho and ENPO, “consist of only male representatives of the various tribes” and there was “not a single woman representative” within these two organizations.

JACWR said when half of the total population was not taken into account, it was “evident” that there was “injustice and discrimination” within the Naga society.

JACWR hoped that the respective offices would honour the High Court’s order and protect women’s rights by “adhering to the stipulations of reservation of seats for women” and ensure that the civic elections scheduled for April 2012 were “conducted in a free, fair and peaceful manner”.

Stating that Naga women organizations were preparing to “set up consensus candidates” in all the wards reserved for women in 19 Municipal/town councils, JACWR  said that it expected the state legislators to “honour their word”  and stand by Nagaland Municipal Council First Amendment Act, passed by them.

The memos signed by Abeiu Meru, NMA president, convenor, JACWR, Rosemary Dzuvichu, advisor & member, JACWR, Lochumbeni Humtsoe, secretary, NMA & member JACWR and Vilanuo Yhome, secretary, TWO & member JACWR, also reminded that the decision of Naga Hoho and ENPO requesting necessary amendment of the Act stating that it was “beyond the Art.371 (A)” was not “tenable and misleading”.
