Wildlife Week 2012 was organized by Kigwema Youth Organization (KYO) in partnership with Nature Club at Merama ground, Kigwema.
Sidramapa MC, IFS, divisional forest officer, Kohima speaking at the occasion as resource person stated all animals and plants are useful and necessary for ecological balance.
However, he said only few species were known to be useful to us and domesticated or cultivated. He also said that research was on and many were yet to be discovered for which he stressed on protecting and preserving wildlife for “our own good”.
Speaking at the inaugural programme, Mezhüvo-o Thorie, president KYO stated the organization would do its best to protect and preserve its rich biodiversity.
He further stated that such programme was organized to create awareness and to change the “attitude of gun user from hunting wildlife to competition and promotion of sports”.
The programme also organized an air rifle shooting competition wherein Neikeso Phira bagged the first position, while Kuvile Phira and Khisakedo Phira bagged second and third respectively
The winners were awarded cash prize of Rs. 5000, Rs. 3000 and Rs. 1000 respectively. Neisale Neihu chaired the function, invocation prayer pronounced by Mehizole Zutso while Khisakedo Phira delivered the vote of thanks.
