Legal awareness campaign on ‘Statutory rights of women’ organized jointly by Nagaland State Commission for Women (NSCW) and Peren Government College was held Wednesday at Peren College Hall, Peren.
In the keynote address, chairperson NSCW, Dr. Temsula spelt out the guarantees list in statutory rights of women which basically ensures protection and safeguarding the woman but her entire self as a human being.
She also gave a comparative assessment of men and women mainly basing in the context of Naga society while challenging the women folk to do away with the traditional role of being in secondary position.
She then said that NSCW was against injustice of women adding that NSCW was not against men.
Resource person, legal consultant – NSCW Lydia Yeptho, while speaking on the topic ‘Statutory rights of women’ stressed on rape cases and protection of women from domestic violence.
Dwelling on Domestic Violence Act 2005, Yeptho felt the need to create awareness among the people so that they would be aware of the provision of the act and implement the same.
Another resource person, additional SP Peren, B. Ezung, while speaking on the topic ‘Role of police in safeguarding women’s right’ pointed out special steps taken by the police to deal with rape cases, domestic violence, human trafficking, etc.
He however said that unless the case was registered by the victims, police would not be of any help.
Ezung then called upon the public and the women folk in particular to extend co-operation to the police and play their part so that necessary investigation could be done and culprit(s) brought to justice. Students of Peren College presented a special song during the seminar.
