In a gruesome incident, a 35-year old Naga woman was bludgeoned then her throat slit and the handle of a broomstick inserted into her private parts at Residency Colony Thursday morning.
The body of Nungshilila Jamir, daughter of Imnawati of Longkhum village was found at the backyard of her sister and brother-in-law’s residence at Residency Colony where she was staying for around a week since arrival from Mokokchung.
The body was found partially nude except for her blouse rolled up to the shoulder. Police were told by the victim’s sister and brother-in-law Yimyapangba Imchen that they discovered the body around 6 a.m. in the morning.
According to their statements, the victim had gone to her room on the backside of the quarter ,to sleep at around 11 p.m. Due to the summer heat, the victim had reportedly slept with the door open.
The sister and her husband reportedly slept in the drawing room around 11:30 p.m. since the room was cooler than their bedroom.
Early morning, the body was found lying in a pool of blood at the backyard along with a stained pillow and a mosquito net and a blood stained brick suspected to be one of the materials used to commit the murder.
Police recovered a dao, a potato peeler knife, a brick with blood stains and hair strands from the place of the crime. From the room, police recovered a blood stained bed sheet.
The assailant(s) reportedly slit the throat of the victim and slashed on the back of her head by a dao which was taken from the kitchen.
Bruises were also found on the right side of her forehead and eye. Finger marks around face suggested that the perpetrator(s) tried to muffle her.
Preliminary post mortem reports also confirmed the same. However, till the filing of this report, it could not be ascertained if the victim was sexually assaulted or not. Vaginal swabs have been taken by concerned doctor and report is being awaited.
According to an immediate neighbor, vague male voice was heard of someone telling – ‘hala nokoribi’ (don’t shout) around 2 a.m. in the morning.
Apart from this, police said they did not receive any other report from the neighbours of any suspicious sounds or movements while the crime was being committed.
Strangely, police said the bedroom of the victim’s sister and husband was also found ransacked. The almirah was inside the room was found wide open with clothes and belongings rummaged through.
Police assumed that this might be an act of the perpetrator(s) to make the murder look like a robbery attempt.
If it was a robbery attempt gone wrong, why were the gold necklace, ring and earrings on the deceased found intact, the police questioned.
Forensic experts also arrive at the crime spot to collect fingerprints and other evidences. Additional SP Dimapur when contacted in the evening said three suspects have been taken into custody for questioning. The body after completion of postmortem was taken to Mokokchung.
