Anonymous caller(s) impersonating to be officials from State Bank of India (SBI) head office Mumbai and Kolkata have duped a principal of a reputed school in Dimapur of Rs. 5000.
According to police sources, the caller(s) told the victim that his account would be deactivated, if he did not furnish his account number and ATM secret pin.
It was only, when he went to check his account, he discovered a sum of Rs. 5000 was deducted from his account, police said. Police also said that they had received similar complaints from State Bank of India account holders of receiving such calls during the last few days.
With regard to this, police has cautioned the public not to entertain such calls and to report to their respective SBI branches, if there was any.
When contacted, one SBI officer told Nagaland Post that it was the “carelessness and ignorance” on the part of the customers that they were falling prey to the fraudsters.
He said that according to the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) guidelines and Know Your Customers (KYC) norms, no RBI or respective bank officers have the right to ask its customers their ATM secret pin code and ID and password in internet banking.
Those asking for ATM secret code, ID or password were fraudsters, he added. He said that SBI would be putting banners and posters in all the ATMs and bank branches.
Meanwhile, SBI Dimapur has also cautioned customers to be aware of such hoax calls through SMS.
One SBI official also said that this kind of hoax calls has been the common modus operandi of various fraudsters.
However, he said SBI has been regularly creating awareness to its customers through media and at every ATM booths and SBI branches.
In making the public aware of these mushrooming fraudsters, SBI Northeast circle on August 29 in all the local dailies had published Know Your Customers (KYC) norms and guidelines for the interest of the public.
