Dimapur police (East PS) Wednesday apprehended one person identified as Thounaojan Ahongjao Singh (25) of Yelong Khangpokpi, Thoubal, Imphal wanted in an ‘attempt to murder and kidnapping’ case while two other accomplices were absconding.
Police said the three persons (from Manipur) on September 3 morning hired an excavator (JCB) from 2 ½ mile area, Dimapur, for use at a place in Pongsang village, near Jharnapani.
On reaching the area and in the pretext of showing the spot, the trio stabbed the driver and tried to slit his throat, while the handyman was hit with an iron rod and a 12-year old boy who was also with the other two was taken captive.
Police said, assuming that the driver was dead, the body was thrown into a nearby pond while the handyman was left unconscious.
Later, a passerby after noticing the injured driver, helped him out of the pond. The driver then called up the owner and informed about the incident.
Both the driver and the handyman were admitted to Referral Hospital, Dimapur. The arrest was made after the minor boy, reportedly kidnapped by the trio and taken to Manipur, was sent back to Dimapur on September 11.
After gathering inputs from the minor boy, Dimapur police informed their counterpart in Imphal. A team of Dimapur police reached Imphal and with the help of Manipur police apprehended one of the accused Thounaojan Ahongjao.
He was brought to Dimapur Wednesday for further interrogation and a case registered at East Police Station, Dimapur.
