Chief secretary Banuo Z. Jamir Saturday said that the rise in female literacy and increasing participants of women in society in Nagaland was a positive sign as the modern educated Naga women were no longer confined to her homes as housewives but also contributed towards the economic.
The chief secretary said this in her key note address delivered on the occasion of International Women’s Day held under the theme inspiring change at local ground Kohima, Saturday.
She said the gap in the literacy rate between male and female in the state were still around 6 % to 8 % in some as wide as 10% yet in higher education up-to doctorates, females outnumbered males.
“Women are getting equipped to handle a variety of career/professions and therefore must ensure that the doors of opportunity are kept open for them including the doors to public offices through election”, said Banuo Z Jamir.
She said that the conservative societal mind set to confine women at home was undergoing change in Naga society.
The chief secretary said women continued to advocate peace within the state in a democratic way, generating awareness among the general public not to create a conflict situation.
She lamented that despite numerous achievement, women continued to face a variety of problems particularly on issue like safety as there was an increasing trend of violence against women.
With regard to decision making, Banuo Z Jamir said there was an encouraging presence of women at senior levels in the government sector, which was evident in the number of women officer heading departments.
She however said that from the village to the legislative assembly, women still needed to go extra mile to arrive at an equal position at par with men.
Banuo also said that with all the progress made by women in the past, women’s rightful recognition in all spheres was expected to be promoted in the state.
