The show may have finished but the plaudits are still rolling in.
It was Breaking Bad’s night at the Emmys on Monday as Bryan Cranston, Aaron Paul, and Anna Gunn all won in their categories as the series itself nabbed the gong for Best Drama Series.
Cranston, 58, was honoured for Lead Actor In A Drama Series as Paul, 34, nabbed the Best Supporting Actor nod during the ceremony. The pair famously played meth cooking duo Walter White (Cranston) and Jesse Pinkman (Paul) on the AMC show, which aired its fifth and final season last year. Cranston gave an emotional speech encouraging people to chase their dreams as he talked about his love for acting.
Meanwhile, Aaron – clearly overcome with emotion – said upon receiving his award: ‘Oh wow. I feel like I’m gonna throw up. Can we please have another round of applause for [his fellow nominees]. I know we speak for everyone in the room, in saying we are grateful you found this gift inside of you guys.’ Adding: ‘Breaking Bad has changed my life and it is all because of one man: Vince Gilligan. Thank you for believing in me and letting me play this guy [Jesse Pinkman].’ And he didn’t forget his partner in crime Cranston: ‘Bryan there’s not a single day that goes by that I do not miss running to work so I can work opposite of you. I have learned so much both on and off set. And to my wife – my god – thank you for marrying me.’ Gunn, 46, won for Best Supporting Actress In A Drama Series and thanked her onscreen husband Cranston with profound emotion. The 53-year-old actress was stopped on her way to the winner’s podium by the Breaking Bad star, who grabbed her and planted a smooch on her. The comedic actress is the addled second-in-command on HBO’s political comedy Veep, and won the Emmy Award for best actress in a comedy series. She has won the Emmy twice before – in 2013 and 2012 – for her role as Vice President Selina Meyer. She won in the same category in 2006 as star of The New Adventures of Old Christine, and in 1996 as best supporting actress in a comedy for her role as Elaine Benes on Seinfeld.
Earlier in the evening, Cranston and Louis-Dreyfus handed Jim Parsons his gong for Lead Actor in a comedy series. But later that night when Louis-Dreyfus won her gong, Cranston grabbed her on the way to the stage and planted a long passionate kiss on her. Ty Burrell of ABC’s Modern Family and Allison Janney of CBS’ Mom won Emmy Awards, just minutes after host Seth Meyers opened the ceremony by tweaking the broadcast networks for falling behind cable series and online newcomers when it comes to awards.
Noting that the Emmys moved to Monday night to avoid a conflict with Sunday’s MTV Video Music Awards, NBC late-night host Meyers said that MTV doesn’t really specialize in videos anymore. Parsons, the lovable geek on The Big Bang Theory, was the winner of his fourth Emmy Award for best actor in a comedy series.
