Awareness programme on prevention and control of pig diseases at NU-SASRD campus

An awareness programme on prevention and control of pig diseases cum wild fodder preservation was organized by the all India coordinated research project on pig (AICRP-pig), department of animal production and management (APM), Nagaland University, school of agricultural sciences and rural development (SASRD) Medziphema campus in the farm premises November 28.
Altogether, 36 participants from the piggery self help groups (SHGs) from Medziphema (two groups), Sirhima and Rüzaphema Villages (one group each) attended the awareness programme.
Speaking at the programme, NU-SASRD pro vice chancellor Prof. N.S. Jamir said that the farmers should make use of all the available opportunities like the fodder seeds, richly growing herbs and forages, medicines and vaccines and seek the service of the technical man-power both from the agriculture and the veterinary departments.
AICRP-Pig in-charge Dr. M. Catherine Rutsa, who chaired the programme, said the AICRP-Pig Nagaland centre and the staffs were in touch with the four piggery SHGs round the year for disease prevention and control, feeds and feeding management, artificial insemination in pigs drawing resources from department of veterinary & animal husbandry, ICAR Centre-Jharnapani and NEPED-Kohima.
Department V&AH deputy director (fodder) Dr. K. Kire called upon the pig farmers to work towards enhancing profit by reducing the animal feed cost.
Dean SASRD Prof. M. Aleminla Ao appreciating the hard work of the team working under the AICRP-Pig, urged the farmers that whatever they learn should be put into practice.
“Ze-u SHG” from Medziphema village shared group activities in piggery farming and Shürhikho-ü of Rüzaphema village expressed gratitude for inviting them to the awareness programme.
Prof.  N.S. Jamir, Prof. M. Aleminla Ao, Dr. K. Kire and Prof. Nizamudin, assistant Prof. department of livestock production & management SASRD, presented one grass cutter to each group leader after the demonstration. Programme concluded with vote of thanks by Dr. Rüüsalie Nakhro, JRF of AICRP-Pig Nagaland Centre.
