A two-day integrated watershed management programme (IWMP) monitoring visit was carried out by land resources department (LRD) to the project sites under Mokokchung district December 4 and 5.
The entourage led by parliamentary secretary of land resources Nganlang Phom included LRD additional secretary Senti Ao, LRD director Mathung Yanthan and a host of officers from the directorate besides LRD district project officer Mokokchung and staffs.
On the first day of the itinerary, the parliamentary secretary and the officials held a meeting with the villagers of Medemyim, which is being covered under the IWMP project and also under special program on economic and environmental development (SPEED) programme.
At the meeting, Nganlang Phom urged the villagers to continue with their hard work and also stressed on the importance of imparting proper technical assistance to the villagers by the department.
Commenting on the fertile soil and good climatic conditions of the village and its adjoining areas, he advised the villagers to study and plan properly while implementing departmental projects so they could reap the benefits successfully. Nganlang Phom also exhorted the villagers to save their land and use it purposefully.
Further, he stated that the department was willing to extend all possible help in order to elevate the socio-economic condition of the villagers.
At the meeting, the villagers explained that since 2011, the department has been looking after the village through the implementation of IWMP, through which the villagers have benefited a lot and uplifted the socio-economic condition in the village.
After the meeting, the entourage proceeded to visit the project site at the village before heading to another farm under Changki village where they camped for the night.
In the evening, a review meeting was held between the directorate officials and Mokokchung frontline staff in the presence of the parliamentary secretary.
At that meeting, LRD director stressed on the importance of proper implementation of IWMP to the frontline staffs.
He also underlined the importance of taking frontline staffs (WDTs) to the field so they could learn new things and could be incorporated in other villages while implementing the projects.
On day two of the tour, the parliamentary secretary distributed 250 bags of NPK fertilizers to the farmers.
The bags were received by the Changki Eco-Green Project president on behalf of the farmers for application in rubber plantations.
The entourage visited other project sites at Tuli area where they had interactions with the farmers.
During these visits, the officials also gave advice and corrections on various issues to the farmers.
The tour was touted to be very beneficial for both the officials as well as farmers as it was more of a learning experience for all.
