James Horner, the award-winning composer for such films as Titanic, Aliens and Avatar, remains unaccounted for following the crash of a plane registered to his name.
A single-engine plane crashed Monday morning in Cuyama, California, north of Santa Barbara. The crash started a one-acre brush fire and one fatality was found at the site, Ventura County Fire Department Public Information Officer Capt. Mike Lindbery tells PEOPLE. The identity of the pilot has not yet been released, but the Lompoc Record reports that Horner, 61, is the registered owner.
Speaking to the paper, Horner’s attorney, Jay Cooper, said that no one has heard from Horner following the crash, noting, “If he wasn’t in it, he would have called.”
Horner won two Oscars for his work – one for the score to Titanic and a second for “My Heart Will Go On,” which he co-wrote with Will Jennings. Horner rose to prominence after scoring the Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan in 1982. His other scoring credits include Field of Dreams, Cocoon, Willow, A Beautiful Mind, The Amazing Spider-Man the remake of The Karate Kid, as well the Disney-Michael Jackson collaboration Captain EO.
On Monday evening, singer Josh Groban was among the celebrities Tweeting concern about the composer.
I am hoping with all my heart that James Horner was not in his plane this morning. RIP to the pilot that died. Just awful.
