The Bombay high court on Thursday rejected a plea by Sushilabai Patil, mother of constable late Ravindra Patil to intervene in the appeal filed by Salman Khan against his conviction. Justice A R Joshi said that Sushilabai did not have any locus standi in the case. The court held that Patil was an informant in the case and not an injured; therefore he does not come under the definition of “victim” in the case.
Advocate M L Sharma, counsel for Sushilabai, urged the court to cancel the bail granted to Salman, saying it was done in violation of rules. The application also claimed that Ravindra Patil died in mysterious circumstances. “The state is hand-in-glove with the accused in the case,” alleged advocate Sharma.
Patil was provided as a police guard to Salman Khan and was present in the car when the actor drove it over pavement dwellers in Bandra on September 28, 2002, killing one person and injuring four others. Patil was the prime eye witness in the case and had testified against Salman Khan. Patil was found on the streets of Mumbai suffering from Tuberculosis and had died in a municipal hospital in Sewri on October 4, 2007.
