To promote community service and educate people on civic sense, Recycling Initiative, Green is Change in collaboration with Kohima Municipal Council (KMC) initiated a project called “Project 72 hrs” – a seven member team with a primary objective to encourage school and college students to participate in community service as part of their extracurricular activity.
The members under the theme “make it simple, make it clean and make it a habit” commenced their project on the first week of July and carried out their campaign at 8 a.m. for one to four hours every day and completed it within 45 days.
The team also aimed to achieve- town cleaning, educating youth about civic sense, collecting of recyclable wastes, supporting urban local bodies n designing, executing and operating waste disposal systems and behavioural change in people regarding healthy sanitation practices
Addressing the media at Dream Cafe, Saturday, one of the members, Sievituo Solo, said the initiative was taken because of the lack of civic sense amongst the citizens of Nagaland and also to contribute to the society.
He lamented that instead of complaining and being a spectator people could contribute to the society by doing community services. Solo added that the public should not blame KMC on what “we” fail to do. Solo also informed the team now aims to start a new project called “Project 10 days, 10,000 students” to be carried out from next week.
He said that there is a need to create awareness on civic sense among the school and college students because most garbage (wrappers) was being thrown out from buses carrying students thus littering the town.
Solo also appreciated KMC administrator, Kovi Meyase and to those who extended a helping hand while carrying out the project. He then informed that any interested person could join the team.
Other members, Akuonuo Medom said that the positive response received during the project was encouraging while Chris called out to people to come out of their comfort zone and be a part of the team.
