Catholics all over the world celebrated Maundy Thursday or Holy Thursday with the washing of the feet. In Nagaland, bishop of Kohima, Most Rev. Dr. James Thoppil, was the main celebrant at the Mary Help of Christian, cathedral, on March 24. General diocese of Kohima, Rev. Fr. Carolus Neisalhou welcomed bishop, fathers, sisters and faithful for the celebration.
Bishop in his introduction said that “Holy Thursday” was the commemoration of the last supper of Jesus Christ and is celebrated at every Mass, as part of the liturgy of the Eucharist, but it is specially commemorated on Holy Thursday.
Bishop in his homily illustrated the significance of the foot-washing as humble service with love that reached its culminating point on the cross.
The word Maundy Thursday comes from the Latin word ‘mandatum’ (commandment) and refers to the commandment given by Jesus at the last supper to love one another as he has loved us (Jn 13:34 and 15:12).
Bishop further said that “we” commemorate the paschal meal the Lord had with his disciples, during which he established the Eucharist and the priesthood, which are closely linked to humble service in love. Bishop, urged faithful to be grateful to the priests who live and set example of love and service through their life of dedication and commitment.
Bishop also washed the feet of the faithful as Jesus had done. Blessed sacrament and prayers were offered for the people, state and country.
