Two-day national seminar on “Human Resource and Economic Development in India: Prospects, Challenges and Strategies” organized by dept. of Economics, St. Joseph’s College, Jakhama and co-sponsored by ICSSR, Shillong concluded today August 27.
The inaugural function on August 26 was graced by additional director Hr. Education, Kuholi Chishi, as the chief guest. Kuholi emphasized on ‘professionalism’ stating that “we” are learned, educated and skilled but lacked professionalism. This has led to huge unemployment in the state. She exhorted the gathering to be creative and innovative and called on the young people to be the solution of the prevalent problems, and be the persons who would be professional and skillful to have the cutting edge.
Vice-Chancellor, Nagaland University, Prof. B. K. Konwar, delivered the keynote address wherein he dwelt on the nature of seminar stating it to be an exchange of ideas to improve the standard of living in the society and that quality education was to comprehend and analyse “ourselves” for the future. He pointed out the problems of the North Eastern states in Human Resource and Economic development.
Convener of the seminar, Saju Mathew gave an introductory speech wherein he stated that “our” country has great potential to become a super power in economy..
Earlier, delivering the welcome address, principal, SJC Jakhama, Fr. Dr. Sebastian Ousepparmpil, stated that if the youths do not join the mainstream and march forward, they would be left behind.
A special lecture was delivered by Prof. Mithilesh Kumar Sinha, dept. of Economics, NU on “education, employment and development” based on his expansive experience and knowledge.
Eco Voice invoked God’s blessing on the programme and vote of thanks was proposed by asst. prof. Zubemo. Rev. Fr. VemedoKezo Joseph chaired the inaugural session. The seminar was attended by professors, asst. profs., research scholars from different universities of different states and students of the organizing dept.
Fr. Anthony Dukru chaired the ‘valedictory function’ as the seminar ends. Prof. N. S. Bist, Dept. of Economics & Director, Population Research Centre, Himachel Pradesh University, Shimla delivered the valedictory address wherein he appreciated the college for its sincere efforts unlike many other colleges across the country that he has seen. He also pointed out that with the focus in society regarding the economic growth in India being talked and discussed largely, only the few billionaires are growing in the country; the poorest section is never experiencing this growth.
Asst. prof. SJC, Jakhama, James Karaiba presented the report of the two day’s technical sessions after which certificates of participation and presentation were given out by Fr. Dr. Sebastian Ousepparampil, principal of the college. Vote of thanks was proposed by asst. prof. economics, Kelengol Neikha.
