Jakhama Students’ Union (JSU) celebrated golden jubilee (1967-2016) under the theme “envisioning a competitive future” with Trustee, Centre for North East Studies and Policy Research New Delhi, Niketu Iralu as the guest speaker on Wednesday at Campion School ground Jakhama, some 13 km away from the state capital.
Basing on the theme, Iralu in his address enlightened the gathering on how to respond to the high challenges with the rapid increase in population world-wide with limited living space that cannot be increased and resources that were limited. He also exhorted the gathering about climate change which was the destructive consequences due to degradation of the sensitive ecosystem that supports life on planet earth.
He opined that the socio-economic, political and cultural changes took place due to upheavals, threats to world peace, growth due to revolutionary changes and breakthrough in science and technology in general and artificial intelligence in particular.
He said everyone had a role to play as an instrument of God and urged every Naga to be a role model of change. According to him, the mental development of refinement alone cannot change the society but with the growth of inner beauty and character.
While appreciating and praising JSU for producing many intellectuals and responsible citizens in the past 50 years, the guest speaker also urged the Jakhama village to be a light house and model village for the Nagas.
The programme was compeered by Kehozhol Kulnu and Meyiengonu Tetso, pastor Jakhama Baptist church Rev. Zapovil Sophie invoked God’s blessing for the programme, presidential address was delivered by Kelethuzo Yosa president JSU, Jakhama women society presented folk song, convenor JSU golden jubilee planning committee Ar. Zavishio Khieya highlighted about the golden jubilee educational trust, BKK Jakhama presented Hallelujah chorus and all the educational institutes located at Jakhama village were felicitated. Jakhama Students’ Union acknowledged the best matriculate of 2016.
Earlier, the guest speaker unveiled the jubilee monolith and senior pastor ministers’ hill Baptist church Kohima, Tepusaho Tase prayed during monolith unveiling programme.
In the afternoon session, engineer-in-chief NPWD Kohima, Er. Khüpi Natso was the speaker on the topic “50 years and beyond” and also launched the educational trust.
Jakhama Students’ Union launched the educational trust in the name of golden jubilee to encourage the bright students and to assist the financially weak students. In the third session, there was jubilee nite where talents of JSU members were displayed.
On December 27 at the inaugural session of the jubilee programme, managing director Fernwood Higher Secondary School, Koko Vizotha spoke on the topic “education and its impact in the present context”. Golden jubilee souvenir was released by additional director general, National Academy of Customs Excise and Narcotics Shillong. K. Ashi Khieya.
The names of all the excellent performers from JSU members were read out and acknowledged. The golden jubilee celebration was made colourful and meaningful with 50 flags flying high, hoisted by 50 past and present JSU presidents, 8 khels presidents and chairman village council.
