Kohima Law College (KLC) observed “International Day of the World’s Indigenous Peoples 2018” under the theme, “Indigenous peoples’ migration and movement” at the college premises on August 9.

A press release from KLC media cell stated that, in the keynote address, professor-in-charge Kezhokhoto Savi highlighted the significance of the day and recognition of indigenous peoples’ rights. Speaking in the context of Nagaland, Savi said the provision of Article 370 A of the Constitution of India has provided special protection to the indigenous people where only the indigenous Naga inhabitants of Nagaland are allowed to own the land.

He said that the civil society organisations meeting convened by NTC on August 8 to combat illegal immigration into the state and also to effectively implement the Bengal Eastern Frontier Regulation (BEFR) Act 1873 throughout the district in Nagaland including Dimapur, was simply contributing towards protecting the rights of the Naga indigenous inhabitants in the state.
