An outreach program on Police Ki Pathshala was conducted on Friday, at SD Jain Girls’ College (SDJC) and SD Jain Higher Secondary School (SDJHSS) respectively, with Inspector General of Police (Range), Nagaland Sonia Singh (IPS).
At the program, Sonia Singh mentioned that the outreach program was conducted with the objective of creating a relationship between the police and the student community in the state, and to change the perception of students about the police.
In this regard, she said that often people think that the police have a lot of power, and she admitted that they do have some powers, but it does not mean that they do whatever they wish. The police also abide by certain rules and regulations, she said. Citizens have the right to confront them if they are found to be in the wrong and at the same time, she suggested that the police should also be appreciated for their hard-work and their contribution towards the security and safety of the state.
She also discussed various topics related to cyber crime (stalking, voyeurism, defamation and revenge porn), crimes against women, self defence, road safety and criminal law amendments. Singh also encouraged the students to read and understand the functioning of law and order in the state, the rules and Acts implemented.
Highlighting some general information about Nagaland police, Singh said that within the 11 districts, there were 21 circles, with 74 thanas, 24 out-posts and 20 check-posts. The department has 15 battalions in Nagaland of eight NAP and seven IR battalions with another three deployed outside the state.
Singh also elaborated on certain crimes with stringent punishments, the procedure to file a report as per the law, punishment for dereliction of duty, POSCO Act 2012, and protection of children against sexual offences 2012.
She encouraged the students to be confident and bold so that they would be remembered for what they contribute to whichever society they find themselves in.
A similar session on the same topics was also held later with SDJHSS students, conducted by Sonia Singh again.
During the program, SDJHSS students Reji Abraham, principal, expressed his gratitude to Sonia Singh and her team of officers for taking the initiative to reach out to students in order to remove some of the fears and misconceptions that students may have about the police force.
The program was also attended by Om Prakash Sethi, president Jain Samaj and Ajay Sethi, secretary, School Managing Committee.
