
The Peren Forest Division held an awareness program & distribution of chicks and poultry farm equipments, solar lamps, at Old Jalukie on October 6 to empower people at the grass root level. Modular poultry farming units were also set up as part of the program.
A press release by Peren Forest Division stated that a recent report released by the IUCN on “Bonn Challenge and India 2018”, acknowledged Old Jalukie Joint Forest Management Committee for its best practices in restoration efforts by the community.
The Forest department added that it continues to work with the community to sustain their livelihood and the village council has also declared 370 Ha as Community Biodiversity Reserve and imposed a total ban on Jhumming, hunting, and logging. The community involvement in restoration activities has also become a means of providing employment to the locals.
DFO, Dr Sentitula in her address said that development of a community was not all about making roads, and constructing big buildings. It is the realization of oneself and the ability that prompts change, she said. She further pointed out that forests were the storehouses for all living beings and the Naga forefathers read nature in order to know the will of God.
Dr Sentitula reminded the community people to harvest forest resources “sustainably” to meet the needs of the future generations also. The program was led by JFMC president, Iriegwang Mpom, ex JFMC president, Hiatei Hingleu, and Hainkeing Village Council Chairman, Old Jalukie delivered short speeches. Vote of thanks was delivered by chairman JPN, Kumui Nring.
The program was followed by distribution and installation of four modular poultry sheds for rearing of Vanaraja poultry chicks through semi-intensive method of rearing.
