To mark the anniversary of the adoption of Constitution on November 26, 1949, the Constitution Day was observed at Raj Bhavan Kohima on Monday.
On the occasion, the state chief secretary, R Binchilo Thong, administered the pledge and delivered the opening remarks. Thong said that the Preamble contains the aim and objectives of India and protects the whole philosophy and legislative intent of the Constitution. He stated that the Constitution of India was the fundamental law of the land.
High Court Bar Association president, Ashiphri Zho, stated that the Indian Constitution was important in several dimensions as it was the noble and universal book for the people of India. “It lays down the basic structure of the government under which its people are to be governed and establishes the main organs of the government – the executive, the legislature and the judiciary,” he added.
Ashiphri Zho said that the Indian Constitution was the supreme law of the people and guarantees individual freedom to all its citizens.
Senior Addl. Advocate General, TB Jamir, gave a brief note on how the Constitution Day came into being. He stated that prior to November 26, 2015, the day was observed as ‘Law Day’, however, in 2015 the government decided to celebrate the day as Constitution Day to commemorate the adoption of the Constitution of India. He also stressed on the need to pay homage and respect to the makers of the Constitution and to rededicate oneself to uphold the Constitution.
While proposing the vote of thanks, home commissioner and commissioner & secretary to governor, Ramakrishnan, stated that Governor, PB Acharya, had instructed the state government to observe the day in a befitting manner.
The programme was attended by Advisor Law and Justice, Dr. Longrineken, AHoDs, HoDs and other representatives of different organisations.
