The department of History, ICFAI University Nagaland, organized a talk on “Being LGBTQI in Naga Society: Attitude, Issues and Challenges” on March 8 with Moasashi from God is Love Ministry as the guest speaker. LGBTQI stands for Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer and Intersex.
A press release by assistant professor (department of History), Dr. Resenmenla Longchar stated that the speaker Moasashi, who looked at the LGBTQI community from a humanitarian perspective, highlighted issues and challenges faces by the LGBTQI Naga community. He also spoke about the attitudes of the people towards the community, pointing out that bias and discrimination is due to lack of understanding and awareness of alternate sexual identities among the Nagas, as sex is seen as a taboo subject.
Moasashi identified some important problems faced by the LGBTQI community such as discrimination in educational, religious and other social institutions.
He concluded by urging the audience to not remain silent on the LGBTQI issues and to show acceptance, love, compassion and care to this community.
Nagaland’s first declared transgender, Lima, and Bipasha from Assam, also shared their experiences as transgenders.
The talk was chaired by Dr. Resenmenla Longchar, Head of Department, and vote of thanks was proposed by Leve Sangtam, BA 6th Semester.
