
Japfu Christian College, Kigwema, Kohima organised an awareness campaign as part of interdepartmental programme on September 21 at its college auditorium.
A press release assistant professor and president NVCO, Kezhokhoto Savi stated that, topics included consumer rights, environment, food safety, street vendor, food security and human rights. Resource persons consisted of LL.B final year students of Kohima Law College namely Jevitoli Sumi, Mhabeni Tungoe, Shanchu Khiam, Kivitoli Swu led by its asst. professor Kezhokhoto Savi.
Savi said that his team has personally visited the pay counter in Southern Angami region where Nagaland Police were actively collecting cash at Phuzama check-gates & Phesama check-gate, two pay-counters were situated at Jakhama village and another one at Phesama landslide area, the KMC toll tax counter and the SAPO local Tax (Southern Angami Public Organisation) counter were also situated at Phesam check-gate together with Nagaland Police. NVCO in this regard asked the state government to abolish the practice of lease/contractor, syndicate, collecting cash in a form of registration from business community by certain underground group, deducting/cut from developmental funds in a form of commission, etc.
Savi said that the National Food Security Act 2013 is an act to fight against hunger but it was sad to hear that some of the Fair price shops and colonies in the state capital were charging beyond correct price. Stating that one cannot tolerate the excessive charges of almost double for rice, wherein more than fourteen (14) lakhs of the citizens in Nagaland were entitled to avail these food grains, NVCO appealed more citizens to apply ration card except the rich family and high ranking officers in government departments.
NVCO also said that the department of Food & Civil Supplies, Nagaland is required to immediately look into this problem/complaint if not the essence of the National Food Security Act 2013 would not be achieved.
