Following forecast of heavy rainfall in the North Eastern region, including Nagaland, in the next couple of days, Nagaland State Disaster Management Authority (NSDMA) has asked district disaster management authorities (DDMAs) and other line departments to remain prepared to attend to any emergencies that could occur during this period.
NSDMA said strong monsoon activity causing incessant rains, squally weather and lightning strikes was expected in the coming week, which could get intense between July 20 and 22. Hence, the authority also advised people to exercise caution for avoiding any eventualities during this period.
According to the forecast issued by the meteorology department, the entire stretch of monsoon trough is shifting northward, including Northeast India. Moreover, a cyclonic circulation is heading towards Bangladesh and Meghalaya, for which heavy spells of rainfall is expected over the entire North East, including Nagaland, around July 20. Flood situation could worsen due the rise in the level of the river Brahmaputra, NSDMA secretary Lhouchalie Viya stated in a press release.
