Following the outbreak of African swine flu (ASF) in Phek and Kiphire districts, Phek deputy commissioner (DC) has asked the general public to remain cautious and vigilant, and to report any unusual mortality of domestic and feral pigs to the chief veterinary officer’s office.
To control and contain spread of the contagious disease, the DC in a notification asked village councils, public and pig farmers to report unusual pig deaths to the nearest veterinary health centres immediately.
The DC notified the general public and pig farmers of the district that ASF was highly infectious and contagious hemorrhagic viral disease of pigs with 100% fatality rate with no treatment and vaccine.
Hence, control, containment, surveillance and following of bio-security measures were the only way to eradicate the disease, the notification added. The notification further stated that the chief veterinary officer would monitor the situation and create awareness to contain spread of ASF. This was stated in a DIPR release.
