D- deadly delta

 Since 2020 when the highly infectious and dangerous Coronavirus spread rapidly across the globe infecting more than 18 crore people and claiming the lives of nearly 40 lakh ; medical science has been fighting a long and difficult battle to contain the virus. However, it seems that for every step that science advances, the virus continues to be steps ahead. Today, there are as many variants of the Coronavirus with each determining which region to begin its deadly mass mutation (production). In the second wave of the current pandemic to hit the world, the rate of transmission and fatality has been totally devastating. The virus (Coronavirus) has reportedly been undergoing a series of mutations resulting in occurrence of variants. Multiple variants of the virus that causes COVID-19 have been documented across the world. In India, the mutated virus has been named as ‘Delta’ variant for which the World Health Organisation (WHO) has termed it as a variant of concern and is thought to have driven the deadly second wave of infections from March to June in India. The ‘Delta variant’ (B.1.617.2) was initially identified in India in December 2020 and later in the US in March 2021.The Delta variant has been recognized as the dominant virus in many states across India. This virus is also reported to be dominant in Nagaland. According to a weekly bulletin of the department of health and family welfare Nagaland released on July 3, out of a total of 98 samples of covid-19 positive cases sent for genome sequencing at National institute of Biomedical Genomics (NIBG), Kalyani, West Bengal, 93 were identified as the Delta variant; two as Kappa variant and one as Alpha variant with results of two other samples still awaited. Interacting with media persons on July 3, joint director and nodal officer, BSL Labs/Whole Genome Sequencing (WGS) Dr.Vinotsole (Tina) Khamo revealed that the Delta variant has the highest transmissibility at 78 to 121%. She said Alpha variant has 24-34%; Beta variant has 28% ; Gamma variant has 33-51% and Kappa variant has 28-89% transmissibility. The World Health Organisation (WHO) has cautioned countries against complacency just because the second wave was ebbing. This comes against the backdrop of that the Delta variant continues to evolve and mutate and could spread like wildfire again. The D0HFW has cautioned people against letting their guard down and vaccine hesitancy. The Delta variant has been detected in at least 98 countries and spreading quickly in countries with low and high vaccination coverage. As if to counter recent findings that have helped the medical world more prepared, another variant has also been found named as ‘Delta Plus’ variant. According to a study carried by the ministry of health and family welfare, it was found that the ‘Delta plus variant’ – also known as AY.1 – spreads more easily, binds more easily to lung cells and is potentially resistant to monoclonal antibody therapy, a potent intravenous infusion of antibodies to neutralize the virus. The scientific community is uncovering more information about emerging mutations, variants and strains all the time, and leading vaccine developers are testing and evaluating the efficacy of their vaccines in this light. While the fight is on, people themselves, who are the ultimate targets, should be prepared to sacrifice their normal life so that the virus has no breeding ground.
