Association of Kohima Municipal Wards Panchayat (AKMWP) while raising concerns regarding acute traffic congestion and parking in Kohima, sought the immediate intervention of deputy commissioner Kohima to issue necessary orders to address the issue.
In a letter to the deputy commissioner Kohima, AKMWP president Thejao Sekhose pointed out that 70% of the vehicle owners were utilizing the public roads as their personal parking space regularly, creating huge inconvenience and traffic problem, especially in the wards and colony roads.
Sekhose said that this was a pertinent issue which, if put into action, would greatly ease the traffic problem that has been growing worse by the day.
In this regard AKMWP urged the DC to issue a suitable order which would restrict a person to purchase new vehicle(s) within Kohima without producing a certificate from the ward authorities proving that they have private personal space to accommodate their vehicle.
AKMWP also pointed out that despite orders being issued– southern bound taxi parking designated at Lerie colony and Science College & Jotsoma bound taxis designated parking at Chaugei park (above old Minister’s Hill Baptist church), they were still parking at Old BOC area and near assistant director supplies cum Go-down office. This, AKMWP said, were creating inconvenience to the public, creating acute traffic congestion in those areas.
It therefore urged DC to immediately shift them to their designated parking station, as per the standing order.
Further, it said that the Agriculture marketing shed located at TCP Gate Kohima was also creating inconvenience to the public, where the main drainage along the road had been blocked and water flowing through the main road.
For this, AKMWP urged DC to issue orders for dismantling the shed at the earliest, failing which, it said that the public may initiate the dismantling.
As stated, AKMWP requested the DC to consider the matter on priority and issue necessary orders.
