The four-day sports meet of Nationalist Democratic Progressive Party (NDPP) 9th Kohima Town A/C, played at Pusolieke (D. Khel ground) came to a conclusion on Friday.
In men’s football, Ward 14 (Porterlane) emerged as the champion while Ward 6 (D. Block) won the women’s volleyball title, they received cash prizes of Rs 30,000 and Rs 20,000 respectively.
In the final match of men’s football, Ward 14 (Porterlane) overpowered Ward 12 (Upper Chandmari) with a score of 3-1.
While Ward 6 (D. Block) defeated Ward 16 (New Reserve) and emerged as the champion of women’s volleyball.
Earlier in the day, during the semi-final matches, Ward 14 (Porterlane) beat Ward 17B (Electrical/Agri Farm/Mewi Bogei/Forest) in the first match with a score 6-2.
In the second semi-final match, Ward 12 (Upper Chandmari) defeated Ward 16A (Lerie Chazou/New Minister’s Hill) 2-0.
During the prize distribution, host of the meet, Advisor, Urban Development and Municipal Affairs, Dr. Neikiesalie (Nicky) Kire congratulated all the winning teams.
He said Covid-19 pandemic had obstructed the people from organising any such events in the recent past however, with the situation gradually subsiding, he hoped for better days for the people to gather in similar events.
Sharing his observation on the meet, Dr. Nicky said there was a drastic change in the level of sportsperson now comparatively.
He said unlike previous meets, the players now were much more skilled and displayed better sportsmanship which was encouraging on many levels.
He expressed hope that through the meet, youths who took part would take an interest in sports and take it more seriously than before.
He later thanked all the participants for making the event a grand success.
