Assisi centre for Integrated Development in collaboration with National Domestic Workers Movement Nagaland Region observed “World Day for Decent Work” on October 7 at Assisi Auditorium.
In a press release, ACID informed that speaker of the programme, Dr. Adv. Limanochet said the wage justice along with universal social protection was the at the heart of the new social contract that the world so desperately needs, to ensure financial security for households and sustainable economy. He said this was particularly true for informal workers.
He also called on the government of Nagaland to govern in the interest of the workers rather than extract wealth from the workers. Dr. Limanochet also urged the employers not to exploit the vulnerability of their workers.
Earlier, delivering a welcome address, ACID director and coordinator for NDWM Nagaland Region, Sr. Pramila said many a time, people think that only organised work was decent while unorganised was not. She then clarified that every work has its own dignity and respect.
Pointing out that minimum wages in most of the states in the country are inadequate, Sr. Pramila said such inadequate wages leads the workers to continue to lose ground.
“Wage justice is a cornerstone of the social contract between workers, governments and employers that has been broken in the interests of corporate greed,” rued Sr. Pramila.
Calling for action for wage justice in Nagaland, she advised all domestic workers movement and union of the state to stand united with other trade unions for wage justice for all workers, formal and informal, so as to have a decent life and decent future.
